Yes — TMC2209 in StallGuard mode works fine on this kind of machine because hot-wire cutters have very low friction (no real cutting forces). I tuned each axis's SGTHRS once and it's been reliable for ~6 months.
Gotcha: the X and U axes (front-back gantries) need slightly different SGTHRS because one carries the wire PSU cable and one doesn't — the cable drag changes the back-EMF profile. If your homing is inconsistent, that's likely why.
