Separate PSU from the controller / motors, ALWAYS. Hot-wire heat is unrelated to motion logic and you don't want a wire glitch resetting your motor controller.
Spec depends on wire length × diameter × material. Rule of thumb for 500mm of 0.3mm Kanthal: ~24V at 2-3A. So a beefy 24V 5A bench PSU or an old laptop brick (be careful of voltage spikes on these). Drive via MOSFET on the controller's spindle PWM output for software temperature control.
