Is it safe to cut polystyrene indoors?

запитано Спільнота · 2026-06-08
With ventilation, generally yes for EPS/XPS at a correct low temperature, but never in a sealed room. The cut releases styrene vapour and fine particulates that are irritants; the hotter the wire, the more fume, which is another reason to run the wire as cool as the cut allows. Open a window, use a fan to pull air away from your face, or build a small extraction hood, and consider a mask for long sessions.

Never hot-wire PVC or chlorinated foams — they can release toxic, corrosive gas. Keep the workspace tidy (foam dust is flammable and clingy) and the wire's mains wiring safe. Treat it like soldering: low fumes, but ventilate and do not breathe the plume.
