Stepstick drivers (A4988/DRV8825/TMC2209) plug into carrier sockets and take four wires to the controller logic — STEP, DIR, EN, and GND — plus motor power (VM/GND) and the four motor-coil wires. Get the coil pairs right: identify the two pairs with a multimeter (each pair reads low resistance), and wire each pair to the driver's A1/A2 and B1/B2. Swapping a pair reverses direction (fixable in firmware), but mixing wires across pairs will make the motor buzz and not turn.
Set the driver current before running, add heatsinks, and never plug or unplug a driver with power on — that is the classic way to kill one. With TMC2209 in UART mode you also wire the UART pin for software configuration.
